A Message from Supervisor Ed Romaine About Pool Safety...

Dear Resident,

The warm weather is here and for many Brookhaven residents it's time to open up the backyard swimming pool, or install a new above-ground or in-ground pool for a fun-filled summer with family and friends. Your first priority must be to make sure that your pool is safe and secure. Click here to view pool safety links and documents.

Each year, we are saddened by the news of young children who are involved in water related incidents that could have been prevented if proper pool safety measures had been taken. In fact, the Town of Brookhaven and New York State building codes include very specific rules and regulations regarding swimming pool safety such as pool alarms, secure fencing, anti-entrapment devices, self-closing and self-latching gates. These are not merely suggestions; they are required by everyone who has an above ground or in-ground pool, or even a hot tub.

In an effort to save lives, the Town will take swift action against those who violate our codes with regard to pool safety. If you have a pool, or plan on installing one, it is your responsibility to be in compliance before you fill it with water, and failure to do so will result in strict enforcement and costly fines. If you do not know the rules and regulations for pool safety, please click on the link below. In addition, if you know of any backyard pool that is not in compliance, you can call 451-TOWN (8696). We will take immediate action against the violators while at the same time keeping your identity completely confidential.

My goal is to help prevent injuries and save as many lives as possible. I ask that every Town resident be diligent and responsible so we can all enjoy a fun and safe summer.

Thank you,

Ed Romaine
Supervisor, Town of Brookhaven
